Rhône White Blend, le Clos du Caillou 'le Caillou Blanc'
50% Grenache/35% Viognier/15% Clairette
Golden color, bright wine with beautiful clarity. The nose is intense with aromas of marinated apricot, vine peach, fresh pink grapefruit and yuzu. The palate is round and fresh, with white fruit liquor, pear, fresh pineapple and notes of peel of citrus fruits. It is a mineral and gourmet wine.
Hand-picking with sort out in the vineyard and in the cellar. Pneumatic pressing in whole bunches. Cold settling during one night at 50°f. Harvest began on August 25th for the white Grenache, August 26th for the Viognier and September 6th for the white Clairette. Vinification in stainless steel tanks.
The Clos du Caillou was founded in 1895 when Élie Dussaud settled there and created an old cellar. It started as a hunting preserve and this history ironically led to its exclusion from the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation upon its creation in the 1930's.
When the government experts arrived at the Clos in 1936 to survey the land for its inclusion in the new appellation, they were met with armed caretakers telling them they were not welcome! This is the reason for the seemingly inexplicable blank spot in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation map and the reason why Le Clos du Caillou produces Côtes du Rhône inside the area of Chateauneuf du Pape.
